GROOMING

The Golden Retriever has a thick, water-repellant double coat. The first is a shorter undercoat attached to the body. Its objective is to protect the dog from the heat of summer and the cold of winter. The second layer is slightly wavy and much wider. It is a type of hair that needs to be brushed at least twice a week to avoid painful and unsightly knots and reduce daily shedding. They shed heavily twice a year, at that time daily brushing is recommended.

Nails should be trimmed regularly as a general rule trimming them monthly is ideal.

It’s crucial to have your dog’s nails trimmed on a regular basis because lengthy nails are more prone to splitting. When cutting dog nails, you want to trim just the end of the hook-like part of the nail that turns down.

Try to avoid cutting the pink area in the center of the nail, called the quick or nail bed, which contains blood vessels and nerves.

On average, you should bathe your Golden Retriever once a month. If your puppy gets really dirty, you can bathe him as often as every two weeks. More frequent washing can deplete the natural oils in your puppy’s  coat and dry up his skin.Just as it’s crucial not to over-wash your Golden Retriever, not bathing your dog enough can be just as damaging. A dog who isn’t bathed often enough can develop a skin allergy, parasites, infections, or other skin problems.

Dental illness can cause swollen and sore gums, as well as tooth loss. Brushing your pet’s teeth at home at least two to three times per week and taking your pet to a professional dental cleaning once a year are recommended to prevent serious dental disease.
